Is my car allowed for UberXL? What model vehicle do I need to drive for Uber? Can I drive for Uber with my 10 year old car?

  Need rideshare insurance? Click here.

Looking to drive for Uber? Your first step would be checking if your vehicle meets Uber's minimum requirements. Uber has created guidelines for what types of cars are eligible within each Uber service and we have listed these guidelines and the accepted makes and models below. For more information on becoming an Uber driver and the steps you will need to complete visit this help article.

First, for all Uber services there is a standard set of mimimum vehicle requirements, listed below.

Minimum Requirements for all Uber Services

Next, Uber has lists of specific requirements for each service level. These requirements can vary greatly depending on the service. Uber's budget option, UberX has the least stringent requirements and their luxury services such as Uber Black or SUV have the toughest requirements. We have broken down each service levels requirments below.

UberX

UberX is the most commonly used service that Uber offers and it is also the cheapest. This rideshare service is deigned for everyday use and is the most popular option for riders.

UberXL

UberXL is the service designed for larger groups or “for those times when you need a bit more space”. For this service you will need to own either a SUV or Minivan that can accomodate up to 6 passengers. Uber XL rides will yield higher fares than UberX rides but keep in mind that if you sign up to drive for XL you may still get UberX rides as well.

UberSELECT

Mid-tier luxury sedans that will yield you higher fares. Fun fact, your car must have a leather or vinyl interior!

UberBLACK

Uber's original Luxury option. Vehicles are required to be a high-end luxury sedan or SUV, in black. This service comes with high fares and your driving etiquette is also expected to meet this level of quality.

UberSUV

Similar to Uber Black but for larger groups. As with Uber Black, UberSUV yields some of the highest fares you will see with any Uber service. Only black SUVs qualify.

UberLUX

Only pristine high-end vehicles qualify to drive with UberLUX. Likewise, only commercially-licensed drivers are eligible to drive for UberLUX. UberLUX vehicles may be sedans, crossover SUVs, or full-sized SUVs.

Uber for Deliveries

As a delivery driver you will not be driving passengers but instead will be working with Uber to deliver food and goods around your city.

Lastly, see the specific makes and models that Uber allows for each service below. If you do not see your car listed but believe your vehicle meets all of the above criteria contact Uber directly as they may make an exception.

Great info RideGuru, quick question, what city are you showing the Tesla Model 3 available for UberSelect?

I agree with you 100% that it should be, but somehow in Los Angeles County, they say Tesla Model 3 isn’t available for UberSelect, BUT an Audi A3 is? 🤨

What do you mean "available?" Available to be ordered?  or Eligible to be driven?

Tesla Model 3 and Audi A3 both satisfy at the least UberX due to the fact they have four doors and are large enough. I'd like to think either fall under UberSELECT in any US city...but what do I know. I can't afford either of them. :)

Tesla Model 3 should be an UberSelect in any market. If the option doesn't automatically appear in your app, you should contact Uber.

Arrived at DFW airport and Uber Select was $1 less than Uber. ($66 vs $67 to Ft. Worth downtown).

The vehicle was a newer model Ford Explorer (3 row) with cloth seats. I thought Selext had to have leather or vinyl seats.

UberBlack and UberSelect are similar in prices, right? It's the UberX and UberPool that are dirt cheap.

Uber is still a bit vague on what the requirements are for Uber Comfort, probably since the program is in beta still. They do mention that both the vehicle and driver have to qualify and so far we have heard of drivers qualifying with a 2016 Ford Explorer Limited, a 2016 and a 2018 Mitsubishi Outlander.

You totally could.  Full size four-door car.  It qualifies for regular UberX and UberPool.

It doesn't have to be specifically on the list.  Go ahead and submit your application, and it will be accepted.

Yeah, as long as it isn't like 15 years old and not a piece of crap, you should be fine.  I actually know for a fact in Seattle a few drivers who drive Hyundai Accent.  Not sure why it isn't on the list.

Yes, you would totally be accepted for UberBlack (if the car is literally black) or UberSelect. I wouldn't worry for a second.  (It's luxurious, it has 4-doors and takes 4 passengers.) If you already have the car just submit your application, and they should approve you for it. (After signing up as a driver and it doesn't automatically enable the UberSelect option, make sure to contact Uber!

      What a gorgeous car.

Hi, I'm wondering where this list of eligible XL vehicles is coming from.  My 2019 Nissan Pathfinder is not coming up as eligible for uber XL on my driving preferences in the driver app and when I called uber they told me they have an internal list of XL eligible vehicles and the Pathfinder is not on it.

    Thanks

Why  isn't the 2018 Kia Sportage AWD on the list for Uber Comfort? It's the same car as the Hyundai Santa Fe - which is, on the list for Uber Comfort. Also the Kia Soul which is half the size of the Sportage is also on the list for the Uber Comfort.

I've been sending messages to Uber about this issue since they came out with Uber Comfort.

My 2018 Kia Sportage is very roomy, which my riders tell me all the time.

I’m looking for a new vehicle to use for Uber and Lyft and would like to move up from UberX. I’ve fallen in love with a Maserati sedan, but really don’t want black on black. Are there other classes that I would qualify for?  Also, as a driver, what else is required?
