Uber’s technology is enhancing mobility and independence for millions of people with disabilities worldwide by providing greater access to transportation, earning opportunities, and basic necessities like food and groceries.

The company's mission is to build a platform accessible to users of all abilities and foster inclusion in communities globally. On Global Accessibility Awareness Day, Uber introduced new features and improvements in its app to advance its commitment to accessibility.


Enhancements for Deaf and Hard of Hearing Couriers

Uber has created economic opportunities for thousands of deaf and hard of hearing drivers. Now, the platform is introducing features to facilitate delivery and communication:

These features are customizable, allowing drivers and couriers to adjust their preferences under App Settings → Accessibility at any time.


Expansion of Reserve WAV

Uber is introducing the ability for riders in Austin to schedule wheelchair-accessible vehicles (WAV) up to 90 days in advance. This feature provides peace of mind for important appointments such as job interviews or doctor visits. Drivers of Uber WAV vehicles have completed a certification course to assist riders with entering and exiting the vehicle. Uber plans to expand Reserve WAV to more cities soon.


Expanded Rider Trip History

Riders expressed difficulty in locating canceled trips in their trip history, which hindered reporting potential discrimination, such as service animal denial. Uber has updated the rider trip history to display all previous trips and canceled requests, including those canceled by drivers before the trip began. This update aims to simplify the reporting of service denial incidents for investigation.


Enhanced Auto Translations for In-App Messaging

To facilitate better communication between riders and drivers, Uber's Auto Translations feature will automatically translate in-app messages. Users will receive messages in their preferred language across 50+ supported languages, enhancing global communication.


Accessibility Compatibility

Uber is dedicated to ensuring its platform is accessible to everyone. The company collaborates closely with its design and platform teams to ensure compatibility with major assistive technologies, including VoiceOver on iOS and TalkBack on Android. Users can provide feedback on their experience using these features through the Uber app.
