Were you charged a Lyft cleaning fee (also called a “damage fee”) at the end of your ride? Lyft drivers have the ability to claim that a rider left a mess in their car and as a result charge you with a cleaning fee to help compensate them for their lost time.
Lyft damage fees range between $25 and $250 and there are 3 levels of severity that you can be charged with.
$250: This is the maximum amount a driver can request. Typically this amount is charge if you are responsible for any major bodily fluid messes inside your driver’s car. This includes vomit, urine, and blood.
$100: This is the typical surcharge for smaller bodily fluid messes.
$25-$50: This is the most common surcharge amount and it covers all other situations from small food spills, left behind trash, significant dirt or sand, etc.
Lyft will automatically charge the responsible party’s credit card on file for the damage caused.
Lyft will send you an email with photographic proof of the mess you created. Within the email, Lyft will detail the amount you are being charged in order to compensate the driver for having to clean your mess.
First, open the app and tap the menu icon in the top left corner. Then tap 'Ride history' and select the ride with the fee you would like to dispute. Scroll down, and tap 'Get help.' If you're an Android user, tap 'Request Review.'
