The Uber price didn't change, even after instructing the driver to take a different route. It should have been cheaper as the route I suggested was shorter and quicker.

If you find this happening, and you are sure there is no surge, you can do the following to change the ride to a time and distance ride, rather than up-front pricing
Time and distance rides are the true cost of the trip, assuming no surge.
Tell the driver you are going to do this before you do it.
After the drive has started, change the destination, what a minute then change the destination back to an address beside where you are heading. You will be told by the app that the ride will be charged based on time and distance.
One warning: If your driver takes a longer route you will be charged for it, unlike with up-front pricing, so be sure the driver follows the route provided to them by the app.
You can use Waze to validate the route, but be aware of the following. The shortest route is not always the cheapest route. What if that route takes you through heavy traffic that significantly adds to the drive time. Insisting on the shortest route in this situation will NOT make the driver happy.
A slightly longer route can be significantly faster. Be fair to your driver.
This was a big deal in the past, and it still should be a big deal now. I feel like we stupid customers have athe tendency to forget. We get distracted by something else and we no longer question the funny things happening here.
Lyft is gauging people by doing their version of upfront pricing. They are quoting people prices based not on their pricing model but charging whatever people are willing to pay.
So you will be judged by who you are, how much you have, and where you live.
Uber does the same thing to the passengers
the more loyal you are the more you will start to be charged. I wonder if their algorithm looks at what zip code passenger lives and maybe what phone they have and adjust prices accordingly
so if the ride yountake every day is 5.00$ during regular time and all of a sudden the same ride is slowly creeping up to 5.80 you know what is going on
I wonder if SEC or FCC will step in and mandate that they must post their rates. I suppose they can get around that by saying they can quote anyone anything.
However, that can lead to discrimination if they are charging different rates to different people. Uber may have to open up their data to authorities and regulators. For all we know they are charging more certain demographics, colors, gender, etc.
What they need is an anonymous mode or incognito mode, where users can go anonymous and book a ride without telling Uber who they are. This will get us a bit closer to fair pricing.
It may ease discrimination on gender and such, but Uber still knows your pickup location so they can charge different prices around that.
but it's a good start.
UPFRONT PRICING.
This reminds of these two posts
The more you use Uber, the more expensive it gets
Uber fare different for same location, same route, same time, and no surge
Had drivers pick us up at home and take us to the airport. Mileage (36 miles) identical all 3 times and all between 2am and 3am. First 2 times, driver took 41 minutes and cost was was $37xx. Yesterday time was 37 minutes, identical route, but cost was. $49. This is a puzzle. Don’t find a phone number to ask why. All drivers have been great.
