Driver here. Uber cars are technically supposed to be smoke-free. But like brownbear said, even if that rule was adhered to, you don't know the car's history. One thing you could do is call the driver after you request the ride (you can call via the app), and ask them, explaining that any previous smokers in the car at all would give you a bad reaction. Most drivers would be honest about it since they don't want a bad rating. They would rather you cancel the ride than get a 1 star rating.
Let's not go crazy here. I mean, I agree that we provide a really important service to the world, and that some of us go above and beyond the call of duty in doing so. And we deserve a nice tip for doing so!! But we're not going around pulling babies out of burning buildings. Let's be realistic. The poster is wrong and does lack empathy in this, but he's not wrong that we are paid primarily to drive people to their destinations. It's just that that doesn't mean we don't deserve to be rewarded for it.
I think it's really a matter of culture. Uber screwed it up by going big at the beginning with their "no tipping necesary" mantra. But that is changing. Before Uber came along, it was considered 100% normal and expected to tip your taxi driver. That expectation is coming back to rideshares now. Give it a few years and it will be the norm again.
Come on, I know we're all drivers here, but you have to recognize reality. Driving is a commodity. One driver is interchangeable with any other driver. That's what makes a commodity a commodity. Yes, I do realize that some drivers drive better than others, and some provide snacks, or have a nicer car, but these are trivial differences, and -- key -- they do not affect which driver a pax chooses. The market for rideshare drivers is not a competitive market. At the end of the day a driver's only job is to get someone from A to B, and they all do reliably and roughly the same way. The only real way Uber and Lyft can compete is on price. If I could somehow translate my good service, clean car, and witty banter into higher fares, I would agree with you, but that is impossible today. The best I can hope for is a slightly better tip.
Apples are a commodity too. Even though, yes, some apples are bigger than others, and a few that come through will be rotten and have to be thrown out. At the end of the day an apple is an apple. The only way apple providers can compete is on price.
I'm sure Uber would try hard to convince you otherwise, but they are merely selling a commodity.
What???!? normal people get paid to do this?? I thought the company came around and did it, but now that I think about it that would be dumb.
Yeah the self driving thing is waaaay further off than people think. Maybe in 20 years. Maybe. There are so many issues people don't think about. What about driving in snow? They're testing these things in frigging arizona and california. Half the year in the north they can't handle the weather.
Sad as it may be, I think you're right. The drivers will always lose out, unless driver pay is regulated somehow, or they unionize. This is the dark side of capitalism IMO. Labor vs. management. Management has all the power.
I love that illustration!
I can't tell you how many people I have driven by who were driving all over the lane, and then I look over and lo and behold they are buried in their phone texting. I think it's worse than drunk driving. At least drunk drivers are trying their best, and actually looking at the road!
But I haven't noticed women being worse than men. If anything I would say I see them about evenly.
Exactly. You're not going to save money renting a car. You are dealing with a middleman, who is going to get their cut one way or another. Go straight to the source and buy a cheap car for this.
Exactly, you are basically competing with uber then. Good luck with that.
The bright phone thing is super annoying. People realize how distracting it is.
You tell me where you can find a $75 beanbag chair and maybe I"ll believe you... those things cost a couple hundred bucks at least, and that's for the cheap ones.
Cool idea. What are the prizes and awards that can be won? Or how much money is a point worth?
So, basically turning rideshares into taxis. Ok.
Man... I'm sorry, but this guy really could have gotten out of this. Ok, so he was worried that they'd drive off with their bags, including an engagement ring. Why didn't he just say "Ok, I'll pay you. My wallet is in my bag in the trunk, one sec."? And then just run. I mean, what is the driver gonna do, chase them on foot?
Nope. I'm a professional. I don't bombard my customers with ads.
Uh, yeah, no. As long as my pax are paying for the ride, I'm not showing them ads.
Annnnd this is why I will never trust a machine to drive me around.
you shouldn't have trouble getting a ride on christmas day. for one thing, not everyone celebrates christmas. passengers will still need rides, and some uber drivers will still be working. maybe leave a little more time for the pickup just in case. good luck!
Here is uber's policy. Note the paragraph below. FYI.
Damaging drivers’ or other passengers’ property. For example, damaging the car, breaking or vandalizing a phone, intentionally spilling food or drink, smoking, or vomiting due to excessive alcohol consumption.
