Taxi Driver - Boston
398 DriverI've been a taxi driver for 20+ years now. Been in Boston the whole time. I'd like to think I have open mind and am not against signing up for Uber. Just haven't had the chance yet. Oh, I don't own a car, so how do I do that?

Imagine the steps it takes.
- You see the request comes up. You accept.
- You drive to the restaurant.
- You find a parking spot.
- You walk inside the restaurant.
- You wait until the hostess can approach you.
- You wait until the food comes out.
- You walk back to the car.
- You drive to your destination.<-------------------The time you make money.
- You arrive then look for a parking spot.
- You walk to the address.
- You knock and wait at the door.
- You hand over the food
Tell me how this is worth it.
Thanks for laying this out. and what a great call on the surge.
Does Uber give you the adjustment? I feel like it may be hard to argue that as the log will show the ride ended and it'll be hard to prove you actually carried the passenger all the way.
One time, I drove this guy to his friend's house which was a gate-community. We buzzed his friend but there were no responses. He said there is a party and he must not be able to hear his intercom.
There were other cars going by and going into the community. The guy insisted that I follow another car through the gate. Told me to stay "very close." I declined, completed the ride without asking and told him to walk. I will not risk the gate shutting on my car AND did not want ot be involved in tresspassing as this man could not prove to me that he had permission to enter the premises.
I have no idea how far the walk was for him, but he was super pissed. Screamed and yelled and gave me a 1-star rating. Uber took care of 2 weeks later.
I agree with your thought on whether it actually does anything to motivate the users. Sure, getting deactivated for having 4.60 or below is bad, but it's not like we get paid for having a 4.90 (which is super high).
Perhaps Uber should consider gamificating the star-ratings and it may inspire drivers to become better.
Make glass dividers more accessible to consumers. Oooh, if I made one, would you buy it?
What's wrong with watching NetFlix for 6 hours and not doing any rides? and making a full day's pay?
and Uber has $70B!!
yeah, but taxis did this since beginning of time.
If you are under NY TLC, you can even pick up in NJ, CT, and PA. It's the almighty pass!

These aren't the $1M yellow cab medallions. They're like gypsy services that started a few years ago that serve the boroughs (not Manhattan).
It's a new service. These are different than the infamous yellow cab medallions.
These say $200K, but it was under my impression that these are regular permits you purchase for much cheaper directly from the city. Are people really doing private sales already? I would be a bit warned of a site like this.
you should check TLC http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/industry/shl.shtml
They are supposed to be much cheaper to obtain so smaller operators and companies can open a taxi service in New York City. They are assigned to specific areas of operations and can certainly not operate in Manhattan where Yellow Can is the sole provider of street hail service. (Meaning they can pick up a hailing passenger)
That's what this article says but the Guru guy mentions the Chicago city ordinances how they count the hours while you are waiting for a fare.
As a driver it's BS. 12 hour shift is nothing. Sometimes long hours is the only way to make a living this crappy job and now they're clamping down on us.
As a taxi driver, I've had 24 hour shifts. That was the norm
Hey, you didn't answer whether the medallion fees should be cancelled! i'd say, yes! Damn hypocrites.
This thread is a reminder that the medallion system in places like NYC and Boston ARE STILL IN PLACE TODAY!! WHAAAAAAAAAAA
The news story also makes it sound like Uber and Lyft are evail for not responding to a random request from a small local news outlet. They finish off by saying Uber and Lyft aren't saying how they are fixing the problem...but they themselves talked about how they are! (e.g. cancellation reasons) Too many holes in this story.
I thought the same thing so I looked at it closely. It's some crappy media story this local station purchased for a story. This isn't like a verified thing. way too much fluff to make it believable.
It's still the fastest car regardless of whether it's in space or not. 0 to 60 in 1.9 seconds. 630 miles in a single charge.

True. There has to be value in having a flexible schedule and working in your spare time.
