Uber users (i.e. passengers) often do not realize that four-star rating is NOT a good thing in the eyes of Uber. The drivers are penalized and can be suspended for having ratings in the low-fours. The problem probably resides on the expectation and the "curve" that has been designed; however, I'd like to ask...
Hey, passengers! What are the reasons you give four-star ratings instead of five? or said another way, what does it take, and what is your expectation, for the driver to deserve a five-star?
Are candies and water bottles a necessity? :)

I think the Uber rating system is perverse. On a scale of 1 to 5 3 should be average and should be considered satisfactory. 5 should be excellent (A) 4 should be good (B) 3 should be satisfactory/average (C) 2 should be unsatisfactory (D) and 1 should be horrible/really bad (F) and I included in parenthesis equivalent grades if I was to use letter grades like school.
Agree completely. It makes no sense the way it is now. Might as well just be thumbs up/thumbs down.
If a driver simply gets me from A to B in a courteous and safe manner, I always give a 5! Waters and candies are not important to me, in fact, when I get in an Uber and am offered chocolates and sparking water I feel a bit uncomfortable taking the items. I know the drivers work hard for their money and they shouldn't feel it is necessary to give gifts to their riders just because other drivers have started doing it :)
...but the competition is a good thing. If it takes water bottles to satisfy their riders, they should...no?
we shouldn't need to give water bottles out just to get a 5 star rating though...
What's with the inflated scores? I honestly don't think 4-star is a bad score. Look at Amazon. 4 is good!!
I have seen some drivers (I take Uber Black) who go way beyond their call of duty. What's wrong with them getting the 5-star and everyone else the 4? Shouldn't they be rewarded for going the extra distance? e.g. getting water bottles, providing WiFi, charge cables, etc?
While your logic is correct, the reality is a bit different. Your 4-star rating is hurting the pretty decent drivers. You know they get suspended for having like 4.25 rating.
Woah woah. Uber isn't randomly coming up with a threshold to suspend the drivers, right? That number is being determined by the curve. I am sure they are working on some type of percentile system, where bottom 10% of drivers will be suspended for days. It just happens that in your city, 4.25 star rating puts you in that bottom bucket.
you have to stay above 4.6 to stay active. http://www.ridesharingdriver.com/fired-uber-drivers-get-deactivated-and-reactivated/
below 4.6 gets you banned.
