I am actually a driver but I'd love to hear other drivers' opinions. I am sure passengers, at least the considerate ones, care also.
I think it's rude and disrespectful when anyone talks on the phone in a car, while there are others around. None of us can talk or have our own conversations. All we can hear is one person talking. When this lasts the whole ride? It's quite hell.
So my question to you fellow drivers is whether you mind if passengers talk on their phone.

As long as a rider isnt rude, disrespectful, makes a mess, or damages my car I could careless what they do. Are some of the conversations they have annoying? Of course. Who cares they are in your car for a short time. Most people who are on their phones are people I want no parts of having a conversation with anyway. Riders are paying for the time they are in your car shouldnt they be able to choose how they spend that time? Maybe they dont want to have a conversation with "a creepy Uber driver" because there are some out there. You are dealing with the public you take the good rides with the bad. You need to be Friendly, calm, and patient.
My passenger can do whatever they want as long as it doesn't cause me aggravation or stress. It's 100% their ride, they're paying for it, and they can do whatever they want.
Let's be honest, the majority of passengers are either talking on their phone or playing with their phone, or listening to music, typically with ear plugs while riding. I certainly don't mind AT ALL... in fact it eliminates the need for a lot of conversation which can sometimes be distracting.
Uber isn't a cab service or a chauffeur service. Uber is a ride sharing application and you're being paid to essentially pick up paying hitchhikers. You guys have it backwards. I have 4.96 with 200 rides and if they think they can do whatever they want or say what they want, they're wrong. You are your own boss and can decline or stop the trip if they are being rude or being a distraction. You can have your money back and call an Uber that accepts being treated like a personal driver.
As a rider, I appreciate your attitude and approach, not to mention fully agree with it. From a rider's perspective -- sometimes I'm busy and this 45 minute ride to the airport can be put to good use (returning calls), sometimes I'm tripping in the middle of a vacay and love chatting and getting local info/tips on the town. As you said, its my ride, I paid for it.
Just the fact that you ask this and knowing that there are drivers who do not understand being in the service industry at all.
These are your customers. These are the rides they paid for. They aren't yours. They bought time and space from you. You are not doing them a favor. You are providing them a service that they paid for.
Until you get that through your thick head, you really shouldn't be in this industry.
No, I really don't care.
How are you mad? Half of my passengers are on the phone. Are you mad 50% of the time while you are on your shift?
Why is this even a discussion. Isn't this like the default thing that people do when hopping on a cab or an Uber? When alone, this must be what 80% of the riders do.
And please, the drivers talk on their phones ALL the time. It's like the way of life for both drivers and riders a like.
I don't mind one bit as long as they are not obnoxious. It's their ride and they can do whatever they want within reason. Normal rules of etiquette do apply IMO. Talk at a reasonable level. Don't scream in the driver's ear. Don't be rude. Other than that, do whatever you want.
After 30 years of driving most personal phone calls that passengers make are useless and annoying
As an Uber driver ,I love to drive in order to have fun get excited to meet a positive cool people with a friendly attitude especially those since of hummer who are funny and chatty keeping me entertained by talking to them treating me as a special making my job happy .But sometimes ,when I pick up those arrogant ,jerks and snappy customers they don't say "hello "and just get in and start giving an orders . Many formal passengers want to ride in silence which is very rude and super awkward, and probably many of the drivers on the contrary likes to chatt for fun .Still, as a human being need to contact with each other showing a human interactions with a nice and friendly attitude treating each other with respect . I always rating those kind of the nice humble riders 5 stars if they are friendly and socialize with a sense of hummer by joking and having a small chatting with the riders trying not ignoring them if they want to talk which make me fill having good time doing my job keeping entertained getting treated as a spacial super star which make me so excited and also keeping our vehicle clean with no mess or damages or eating and drinking inside making a mess .if the riders do not engage in conversations I will downrate them with 2 to 3 stars maximum for being formal ,rude and jerks with arrogant behavior acting like they are bossy treating the drivers as a slave especially if they jumped to my car asking me to take them to their destination without saying "Hello" and also if they are not talkative being so quite during the trip entertaining themselves by texting or talking on the cell or people and also if they are talking among to each other with people inside my car ignoring me instead of chatting with me which is really awkward and super rude ,getting frustrating and makes me feel like a machine doing my job which not nice at all to be rude and disrespectful with no reason .Those kind of riders need to understand Uber is a community service not like a taxi cab service taking them from point A to B making a space between the riders and drivers. Also it's very annoying ,super awkward and very rude for being quite not chatty or chatting among to each other keep the driver ignored and also when they ask the driver turning on the radio very loud beside ignoring the drivers chatting among to each other so that they deserve 2 stars for misbehave with no respect for the friendly Uber drivers and their vehicle . So if the riders want to be a good 5 star rating passenger they need to make that " Don't Ignore your friendly Uber driver ".
If the riders are looking for a quite service with a quite formal driver without being sociable and friendly avoiding getting a bad star rating for being formal with a drivers all the time during the trip taking them only from point A to point B just to have a relaxation doing their own privacy by making a space or a wall between the drivers not communicating with them without a friendly atmosphere such as : listening to the music or playing a video on the cell phone and also texting or talking on the phone without an excuse or doing their own entertainment by chatting among to each other ....etc ,it's much better to take a public transport up such as a taxi cab , shuttle , bus or luminous with those formal quite drivers . However ;those cab drivers are unfriendly with their passenger , busy and making a space always who are not talkative with there passenger as long they are looking for a quite and relaxation service like that and also they don't have any friendly greeting their riders like us as an Uber's partners. However; If those arrogant riders ignoring us as a friendly drivers like to have a quite ride with your phone texting ,talking and chatting with peploe with you keeping the uber driver ignored by treating us as a server or slave its will be better for them to take a public transport up such as a taxi cab , shuttle , bus or luminous which is fair enough if they don't show us any friendly treatment with a respect as a human being .

as long as they don't sound like hyenas it's fine with me.
I'm a driver. I have no problem with calls. I especially enjoy business calls. I get to hear 1/2 a conversation about something going down in somebody's business while trying to figure out just what the company does. I once heard a woman I was taking to the airport in a conference call with investors who were getting ready to invest in a marijuana farm in Colorado. They were talking about site size (huge) and plant harvest times (4x per year.) Fascinating stuff and the potential return was astronomical. I might feel different if it was a pool or a shared ride.
We provide a service to riders. They have no obligation to entertain us. If a rider has calls to make, important or frivolous, it does not matter. They are paying for the ride from one place to another. On the other hand.....yes....we all enjoy a pleasant conversation with a passenger.
if it means less dead time filled in with small talk, sure.
I feel like that is one privilege the customer has while they are on a ride they paid for.
It also means I don't have to talk to them and I can focus on the driving. Win-win, no?
