Uber Passengers Begin to Feel the Sting of Low Ratings [Ridester.com]

Here's a great read from our JC at Ridester.   Drivers, rejoice!  Passengers are starting to care about their ratings.

Not long ago, our RideGuru had a forum topic on whether passengers care, and the response was overwhelmingly "no."  Not only that, there have been questions that indicate the users didn't even know such rating existed.  Look at this question from a rider: "Do drivers really rate passengers?"

Here's a new take on Ridester.  Click below for the full article.

"For many drivers, ratings have felt like a one-way street.  But that’s starting to change.  Now passengers are starting to feel the heat too.

Ratings have always been crucially important to drivers – because for many – their livelihoods are on the line.  Their ability to make a living and feed their families is at stake.  While at the same time ratings have been something that passengers didn’t seem to care about at all.  A driver can lose his ability to make a living if his rating goes below 4.6.  But a passenger seemingly loses nothing.

I’ve actually picked up riders with 3.x ratings.  And yes, they were all terrible.  And they should have been kicked off the system a long time before their ratings went into the 3s.  But they suffered no consequences at all.  They were still allowed to request pickups and annoy, and in a few cases, scare drivers to death!"

Had a request from a passenger with a 4.5 11 min. away. Didnt accept it. I got the request again few min later. Then again a 3rd time, by this time I am 20 min away.  Rating was too low. It was a rainy night and it was late but there were plenty of drivers in the area. Hopefully rider figured out that rating sucked and no one wants to pick them up because they are a jerk. Uber may not deactivate their account with a low rating but no one is going to pick them up, small victory.

      Really!  Two surprises.

      1) You think 4.5 is too low? Kudos to you.

      2) I tend to solely look at the time to pick the pax up.  Not the rating so much.  They give you so little time to accept and I am always scrambling, so I rarely see the ratings.

That is the lowest ive ever seen in the 15mths driving 1352 trips. I noticed the rating because on new app everything is so small that is the easiest to see lol. Not only that I was sent the request 3 different times in 5 min. It was around 10pm on a Sunday before football started lol

In Chicago, you can't even see the ratings of people.  It's a law or something.

Thats awful. You have no idea what you are getting yourself into then. Not that stars are a great judge of character but still.

I think if a Lyft passenger that takes a ride that is at least  10 minutes long and not tip Should get a lower mark from driver, since Drivers can wait 24 hours before rating them to see if they tipped or not.

if besides not tipping passenger also did something unsavory they should get a 3 stars

I will actually pass up any request with passenger rating under 4.7. If enough drivers use this logic, passengers will experience longer wait times and start scratching their heads.

i think $1.00 tip for every five minute of a ride should be a good number, rounded up for long rides

uber does not give option to wait to rate passenr from what I know

passenegrs think it is almost mandatory to tip pizza  delivery driver for the 2-3 mike ride he/she makes but optional for rideshare driver who is safely delivering them home.....

I started passing on riders under 4.7 but I started seeing a decent amount of ratings under that.  I couldnt afford passing up that many trips. I started taking trips under 4.7 although I am not seeing many anymore. The riders were nice decent people that I had no issues with other than maybe no tip. The 4.5 passenger I passed on 3X  was probably scratching their head because no one was accepting their request  i would've loved to have been watching it play out. Lol It took at least 10 min for the request to be picked up possibly longer. With Uber i dont like that we have to rate passenger immediately wish we had until after shift was over.

Uber doesnt make it easy for rider to tip. They first have to rate you for the tipping screen to pop up. A little more than half my rides have rated me so lets say 65% rate me they see tipping screen. The 35% that dont rate never even make it to tipping screen. They would have to go into "my trips" click the driver then there …

They would have to go into "my trips" click the driver then there is an option to click tip. Once rider is out of your car you become "out of sight out of mind" for the most part. They will probably never see you again so why tip? So your in a restaurant you are a decent human being and leave tip because its the right thing to do. Other people leave tip because you pay waitress she brings your change.  They dont want her to think you are a cheap jerk so they tip.  Once rider leaves car they never see you again so who cares what that driver thinks. That is why you get those passengers that say "I'll catch you on app" they dont want you to think they are a cheap jerk but we all know  95% of the time that means a big fat no tip because they are that cheap jerk.

It would be awesome if gratuity was automatically added in at say 15% to 20% and an option where rider can choose to tip more if they want.

Remember that #deleteuber movement maybe we should start a #tipyouruberdriver movement. Start a #TIPTHEUBERDRIVERCHALLENGE  25% or 50% of fare. Lol

There was a #tipthebillchallenge last month circulating. Tip waitress 100% of bill. People tipped what the bill was and then took pic of receipt and uploaded to twitter.

I admire these goals and I am in. We have to stand up and, as Eras, says we will set the new trend and expectation for future generations

Gonna be hard to decline all under 4.7...  Can we lower it to 4.3?

Actually, does anyone know if Uber scale and Lyft scale are different?  Do Lyft pax have higher ratings?

Maybe our goal should be to match the tipping for taxis. 15-20%  That's not too much to ask, right?  Or is it

Let's see. $1.00 for every 5 minutes?  If each mile is about $1.50-2.00 on an UberX (roughly), ...darn it. Didn't pay enough attention in high school math to do this. Someone help?

For example if we used a tipping guideline of: $1.00 for every 5 minutes or $0.20 per minute. A 10 mile ride which for instance takes 20 minutes to complete would require $4.00 tip

However if 20% is used as the basis for calculating tips then the same 10 miles - 20 minute ride that cost the passenger $15.00 would only produce a $3.00 tip, but what if that passenger had a promotion and this ride only cost him $10.00?

I rather it be a set amount per minute than a percentage;)

Right, there's already a precedence and expectation set with the pizza delivery.

I don't necessarily blame the people bexcuse there are neither right now.   So we are all trying to establish the precedence and expectation. What a pressure. The income and the traditions of the future are within our hands!!

I don't know, guys. I don't really see the riders caring until Uber starts penalizing the customers for it.

but I have a feeling Uber won't do anything to paying customers.
