5 years ago in  Just got a $50 tip!!

I never tied the two together before.

I knew of this trend where mass transit users are converting UberXs due to cheap prices. This is evident in places like NYC.

Then I hear all these questions on a forum like this where people are asking whether Uber is priced per person.  I wondered why this question keeps coming up, because it’s not like anything has changed from the taxi days.  I Just realized that those questions are coming from the mass transit people.

    It all makes sense now.

5 years ago in  What's a typical passenger rating for Uber? Is 4.50 good?

Yeah, it's like 15 seconds, thought it always feels more like 5.

Agreed on paying attention to the distance of pickup.  That's an investment we have to make. Pure loss.

5 years ago in  Very short trip??

Speak for yourself! I love money!  j/k

Though I will admit. Whether a day is great or crappy totally depends on how the customers were. A simple "thank you" and a smile can brighten up our days.  We want to be seen as providing good service, not just a way to get from a to b.

  • @mark Thanks for clarifying this.  This is a great explanation, better than I've seen anywhere else.

u"Every state protects those who use deadly force when confronted with a bona fide life-threatening situation.  The difference with Stand Your Ground is that a person can kill without being directly threatened."

  • Your post is exactly the reason Uber needs to enforce its laws if they want to maintain authority.  If this driver wasn't deactivated as stated in the Uber terms, no one else will listen to those terms.

I agree with you though.  If you drive in one of those states and have legal rights to carry, I think you should.  You have it for a reason and you feel comfortable with it.

5 years ago in  Lyft with Express worth it?

Commitment for a fulltime gig is often hard for a Lyft driver, and you will sacrifice flexibility with this. If you go with renting, you will lose some plays in the Lyft driver playbook.

There are lots of styles of play in Uber and Lyft driving.

    • Only driving the weekends.  Drive 8 hours Friday night and 8 hours Saturday night, and you can make as much as a driver who drove all weekdays.  It's that lucrative and some people only work those hours.
    • Let's say you have to drop off a friend at the airport an hour away.  You are wasting gas on the way back.  but with Uber?  You may be able to get a fare on the way back.

BTW, I have gotten 50 rides driving only weekends.  not sure if you can get 75.  I doubt it.  On the flipside, I think I can definitely say you are giving up one of your weekends unless you are good right out of the gate.

5 years ago in  Deactivation Pending????

Are you still active?  No news from uber?

  • Would it really increase the chance of getting your pings?  I guess in a very populated area with a lot of activities?  but if there are lots of activities, you will naturally be getting pings, and you can only accept one anyways  I don't see this working.

5 years ago in  Can a parent order Uber or Lyft for a teenager? My kids?

    Webcam. At all times.

  • I admire these goals and I am in. We have to stand up and, as Eras, says we will set the new trend and expectation for future generations

Gonna be hard to decline all under 4.7...  Can we lower it to 4.3?

Actually, does anyone know if Uber scale and Lyft scale are different?  Do Lyft pax have higher ratings?

  • Nice!

The fatal confrontation, captured on Westlake's dash camera, was what the Polk County sheriff called a "classic 'stand your ground' case," referring to the controversial Florida law that grants immunity to people acting in self-defense.

"This is a justifiable homicide all day long. You have the right protect yourself," Sheriff Grady Judd said Wednesday. "This was the intent of the law."

  • The best you will get from an UberX driver is a Lysol counter wipe. (We use those to clean cars between fares.)

5 years ago in  Will Uber/Lyft get rid of drunk driving?

No completely, but they have definitely reduced it.

Forget the naysayers.  The use of taxi/uber type services are up.  It's the convenience that made Uber such a disruptor.  Just that fact alone contributed to carving out drunk driving.

People know drunk driving is dangerous, but they still do it because "it's a pain" to plan, arrange alternate transportation, calling a car, etc.  Now that Uber provides much easier dispatch and affordable rides, it definitely lowered the barrier. Hence reduced drunk driving.

5 years ago in  Are there all day hires?

No, not for major rideshares like Uber and Lyft.  You pay for your ride depending on the trip that you specify, primarily calculated based on distance and duration.  I suppose you can just ride it all day long and incur the cost, but it certainly isn't a flatrate like you are thinking.

You should call a tour company or just call a local taxi company and ask whether you can "rent" a cabbie for the day.  They definitely do that, and they should be able to give you a flat rate.

  • Uber doesn't. I even asked them.

These types of discounts are usually provided per the rules mandated by the lawmakers and apply to entities under regulations.  This is considered as a public service.  It's usually subsidized by others and not meant to make a profit.

Since Uber doesn't follow regulations at all, even if your city has such rules, I doubt they'd follow it.  LOL.

  • Unlike taxis, we are dispatched and assigned to particular individuals, so we don't need to fight over the passengers.  (well, I guess we sort of are, but virtually)

I suppose we may not tell each other our secret places.  We have to keep our exact routine and routes to ourselves.  You don't want other drivers flooding your own market.  So the mum is the word in some cases.

So, yeah, I guess there are quiet rules and a unspoken distant that we put between us.  Then again, I really don't "run in" to other rideshares much.  It's a pretty lonely gig for the most part.  At least for me.

  • You mentioned the biggest tip in becoming a driver.  Trust your gut.

As a driver, you don't really get dinged for cancelling.  You don't have to pay a fee.  The cancellation rate just needs to stay below 20% (at least that's what lots of drivers say).  That means you can cancel one out of 5, and you are still okay.

  • Passengers who wait in locations where it's illegal to pullover.

Bus stops, bike lanes, weird airport curb sides, bus stops, taxi stands, etc.  bus stops.  lol.

These are SUPER DUPER expensive tickets.  Please do NOT make us pullover there.  and yes, we can be ticketed even if the rider is quick.

  • Yes, the tip is to tip your driver.  Even a few bucks will help. ...despite what some people say.

Even tip the short trips.  Those are the ones where the drivers get burnt on.

  • I thought you had two chances before you got deactivated.  I had a time where this pothead was on my car and totally stunk up the cabin.  (He wasn't smoking in the car but just smelled like pot.)

Of course the rider after him smells it, and I even KNEW that may lead to being reported.  ...and I did.

Luckily, I got a nastigram from Lyft but was only a verbal warning.
