I actually want new drivers to take this as an advice. Don't pick up crappy riders. Cancel immediately.
This technically isn't cancelling a ride mid-ride, but I went to the mall to go pick up this woman on a Thursday night. There was some traffic and some confusion as to which exit she was waiting. When I pulled up, she started berating me for being late and started to nag. I knew this would be a $5.00 1-star ride. So you know what I did? I told her to get out of the car and cancelled it. Don't need this crap.
Why is this a good advice? Because if you don't start the ride, those crappy passengers cannot give you a 1-star rating.
well, not so fast. If you have lower ratings, more drivers are likely to not accept your ride. You will also be matchd up with lower rated drivers. so there are disadvantages.
4.5 isn't bad. I see it often on the weekends when I am busy. Not sure if "busy" has anything to do with it, but I feel like that's when I see it the most
You are right that I also see 4.3 and 4.4, and I do worry about those. Drivers often give 5 as long as the rider doesn't do something very stupid, puke in the car, or damage something. If you have a 4.3, that means that you get more 4 than 5. That is a red flag in my book.
No, the driver just drives up. There's no button to tell the app that you've arrived. I think this fee gets triggered by the GPS vicinity.
I believe the NJ drivers can drive in New York State as long as its in the areas that do not require special licensing like the ones from TLC.
Whether Uber sends you a request is a whole another story. I have heard you do though.
The lowest passenger rating I have seen is 3.91. That's pretty darn low, because I and many other drivers I know pretty much automatically give a 5.
Yeah, I wondered if this passenger only had a few riders under the belt, but it wasn't like a whole number, you know? If it were 3.00, then you'd know the guy could have gotten 1 star and a 5 star (averages to 3.00). but 3.91?
Street Hail Livery. It is the new taxi service that opened up a few years ago to supplement the famous yellow taxis. Notice that all these cabs are green and not yellow. Yep they thought with Uber joining the fray, they needed more taxis on the streets
"Drivers have to affiliate with a neighborhood base. There are 63 bases that have registered with the program: 22 in the Bronx, 17 in Brooklyn, 12 in Queens, 11 in Manhattan and one in Staten Island.
The green cabs are allowed to pick up street hails in northern Manhattan and anywhere in the other boroughs, excluding Kennedy and LaGuardia airports. They also can pick up passengers who arrange rides through the bases like regular livery cars.
The new class of cab was created in part because yellow cab drivers focused almost entirely on Manhattan's central business district and ignored all other neighborhoods like Washington Heights, Sunset Park in Brooklyn and Corona in Queens. Livery car drivers regularly flouted the law and picked up street hails in their neighborhoods, risking substantial fines."

Yeah, trust me. We hate it. Similar reason to why we hate UberEats.
See,the way us drivers look at it? These additional services are good to fill the non-busy times. that's all it is.
...but wasn't that the problem? They just weren't making enough money.
What will I do now with one less driver app on my phone?!!!! <---yes, I am ajerk.
Yes, it's flawed. I don't even need to read it to tell you that I make $3 an hour because I make a living fine as an Uber driver. LOL.
Honestly, I don't know how much so earn an hour but I don't think I'd be doing it for almost three years at $3 an hour.
Fake news. They publish crap like this because it catches people's attention
There are plenty of drivers out at 5:30. (I am a driver.) You are probably getting cancelled because your passenger rating is low. During times when the drivers have pickings, they would ignore and do not accept rides from low-rated riders.
...or are they accepting and canceling later? If that's the case... well, I don't know.
I bet that's only the ones reported. I get more lost items than that. Way more.
In most cases, people don't even make an attempt to connect. I wonder if it's because they don't care or they don't know. or Uber's process is failing.
I've had car keys, digital cameras, and LOTS of kids' toys. I feel bad but I don't even know how to return them.
All drivers carry multiple apps and now riders are starting to use multiple apps. Is this really all necessary? It's starting to feel this cat and mouse game is just becoming...rather convoluted.
Couldn't have said it better myself.
Recode. “It’s more effort, more headache, more potential for complications and a bad rating over things the driver has no control of.”
Open your Lyft app, and click on your profile pic, and viola.
Not sure if this article is completely accurage. Many drivers are arguing this one. Take a look at this article. It says the drivers make more like $19/hour.
https://ride.guru/lounge/p/how-much-do-uber-drivers-make-on-averagesay-per-hour-19-apparently
This one says below minimum wage at 8~13 an hour

Yeah, that's so messed up. That hasn't happened to me, but I was told that I should call my insurance company, and have them figure it out. If you have a comprehensive coverage, they can cover damages (not sure about an airvent though), and if they see fault in a third-party, they can go after Uber or the riders. I think it's called subrogation. I wonder if Uber would respond to that? Good luck!
As a driver I can tell you that I have never seen notifications to be somewhere at a certain time.
With that said, here's one thing. When I get a ride request, I do see that it was a "scheduled ride," and drivers like seeing that because it's usually a longer trip (say to the airport) and it is very unlikely to be cancelled. So, I think the rider has that advantage. it's more likely it'll be picked up drivers aroudn you.
Bar closing times. 1:00~2:00AM on the weekends. hands down
