Remember this mantra of being an Uber driver:
You make money by driving the rush or driving the drunks.
I'm not saying the taxi industry was perfect but Uber did create quite a bit of mess, setting unreasonable fare expectations from passengers, and triggering price wars.
Where do we go from here, you know?
What's the point of all these test drivers? they don't seem to stop any of these accidents. Just playing candry crush.
Still ok in my opinion.
Look, I drive an UberSUV, and get paid $0.50 a minute. That's $30/hour, $23 even after Uber takes a cut. That isn't a bad gig for sitting there. I usually kill my engine to save fuel, and we are good.
Yes, time is money for Uber drivers, but worst wasted time is bewtween rides and waiting for rides where we make $0.00 an hour. When I am on the clock, I am always happy. I will wait for 2 hours, if you want me to.
Just tip us later, and you are good. 5 to 10 minutes is completely reasonable.
As an Uber driver, sine you are a self-employed independent contractor, you can consider as expenses everything you need to run your business.
- home office
- office supplies
- accounting or tax prep software
- legal fees
- file cabinets, phones, etc. etc.
I am a driver. I have heard of fake vomits, but the easiest trick I heard about is to just pour a bottle of water and then call it is pee. You can't tell the difference in a photo. Just wait to dry.
No, I have not done this. It's sure to trigger a conflict, and eventually it'll catch up.
I think in this example, I think the driver cancelled on the poster.
Drivers don't want your $5.00 cancellation fee. They want the ride. It'd be pretty ineffective for a driver to hide and wait for several minutes just to make $1.00 a minute. Remember, we get paid more like $2.00 a mile plus like $0.30 a minute. It's way bettr use of our time to drive you.
I never imagined that this was a "thing" until I became an Uber driver. How the drivers are invited by the riders to join them on things. Used to think they were weird, but no longer.
This happens mostly in affluent areas. It must be a rich people thing to do. I have joined people's parties, open house, this dude closing on a house, cake-tasting, etc. et.
One memorable one was last month. It was a ride where I drove a mom and a 7 year old to her friend's birthday party. I was asking her about the party that she apparently helped plan, and at the end of the ride, she asked me to join her. I looked to the mom, perhaps hoping she'd get me off the hook, but she gave the, "Yeah, why not? Why don't you come join?" The party had an entire gaggle of kids, maybe 50? and It had not one but TWO bouncy houses, star wars characters on stilts, all-you-can-eat taco bar, where I spent most of my time, and four additional picnic tables full of lavish, obviously catered food.
What really got to me was that the party had these cards that had the schedule printed on them. Multiple events through the day, and there were multiple stations that you choose to attend at different times. They had arts table, clowns, magicians, dance lessons, etc. Each event would be the highlight of a normal kid's birthday party. and each kid got to take home their creation, and it looked like each kid got a gift on the way out. (though I didn't stay long enough to witness that. For all I know, there was some surprise grand finale where Katy Perry would jump out of a cake or something. I felt too weird to stay.
Honestly, this reminded me one of those year-end graduation parties from Billy Madison.
As a driver, I drive the poor and the rich. Every day is a learning and cultural experience for me. I am telling you. Imagine those people who've been driving taxis for 25 years. I bet you, they have seen everything.
I get those too. I noticed that it heavily depends on when and where you drive. I guess that's obvious, huh. Late night on weekends. and by "late", I mean like 3 to 5AM.
It's usually people drunk or high, but not the rowdy durnks. It's more like the "we stopped drinking a while ago and now we need food" crowd.
I know because I used to be them. ha!
Nope. Completed the trip like any others. No idea if what she rated me. :)
LOL. Oooooh, I've actually had this dude actually kick out his girlfriend from my car. They were in an argument for something stupid like not listening and embarassing themselves at dinner, and he was like, "That's it, I am kicking you out of this Uber." (even though it's me who is driving)
She said something like, "You can't kick me out." Then the dude turns to me and says "Please pull over. Her ride is over." Then she yells, "Nooo you get out. This is my Uber. I called it" while shoving the phone into his face.
I basically had no idea what to do, but I had to pull over, which I did. Luckily, I guess they agreed that she should leave, so she storms off while yelling something and boyfriend, calmly shut the door. I will never forget what he said he sighs, looks up and says, "Shall we?"
Don't lie. we all know you've complained about low signal. We all have and we always will.
plus there are deadpots everywhere.
So true. They always say, "huh? i don't know what happened. Are you sure I cancelled it?" Every time.
How would you know there is drugs in the package unless you open it?
As a driver, I will never carry any packages. It's eerily. Who knows what could be inside that package. Bomb? Guns? Drugs? Organs? It could be anything.
I don't think I am being sensitive about this. I mean, such service, will be prime targets for these things.
I'll do all those plus more to get paid. It beats yelling at Uber who never listen anyway.
I do dress nice btw. I feel like it's expected. Collar and khakis at least.
So I had marked my calendar for this "big" announcement by Dara Khosrowski, and it was a total disappointment. Remember, there was a big hype and no one knew what he was going to say. The way he fanned it, we all thought we were getting a pay increase.
Imagine when we heard him say this:
"We focused too much on growth and not enough on the people who were driving that growth. We called you partners, but we didn’t really treat you as partners."
Oooooohhh. More focus on us! The drivers!! Yes, Dara! We deserve to be paid more! We were patient and we waited!!
...then he drops the bomb about a new app. Something we all would have known and noticed when we updated our phone next. We didn't need an announcement for that....
Is your screen name a joke? I can't tell if it is your real name or a Chinese cuisine joke. No offense.
I think many people thought of this. It's just matter of execution. Many drivers had thought of and actually sold things on their vehicles. Cargo made it easier and gave it more legitimacy.
