The car you get with UberXL, can be a numbr of different cars, so there's always a chance you get a smaller SUV. So watch out for that.
and the problem here is that the driver doesn't have to pick up big cargo items. and they hate it when you have big items that needs to be loaded. It can take time in loading and it can damage their cars. They will definitely not like it. (I wouldn't.)
I would request a UberXL, and immediately call the driver to see if he is willing to do so. By some luck, you would get one that doesn't mind and will do the task for you. Make sure to mention upront that you would tip handsomely. (Don't wait until it's over and offer. Just offer upfront.)

Not sure if this is a formal movement, but I have heard vocal groups of rideshare drivers discussing this.
At high level, they are against the illusion of transparency and flexible work schedule that Uber promotes. They feel that as independent workers, they should be able to see the rides they are accepting and decide where to work and what riders to pick up.
They also feel unfair where the riders can see a lot about them but the drivers cannot. For example, riders can see the gender and race of the drivers, but the drivers cannot. If riders can discriminate why can't the drivers?

I stopped paying attention to any types of driver promotions and incentives. Lyft started this trend earlier and Uber is all over it now.
It’s an obvious attempt to confuse the drivers so they don’t really know how much they’re making. They will do this to make us work harder while making less money.
It should be by the actual time it took. Of course! Isn't that how we are paid when we drive our passengers? If there are excessive traffic jam or whatever, it switches over to distance/duration calculation. (I think.) If the passenger changes destinations, the upfront pricing goes out the window, and it goes back to distasnce/duration calculation too.
The same logic and accommodations should be applied for long pickup.
Can you tell me more about this. I have some ads inside the car.
Those rides back to your home location is often called a "dead leg", where the drivers do not get paid at all.
Uber's driver app has this feature that allows you to specify where you would like to go, e.g. home. If you set this, the app will try to match you up with a passenger that is going in the direction of where you are going. It doesn't always work, but when it does, it's great.
On super long trips, this doesn't work that well, unless it's between airports where there are many exchanges. Say between Newark and Philadelphia or something. Two cities that are relatively close and plenty of people travel between them on long Uber rides. There are other examples like LA and Las Vegas, where drivers could drive people on both directions (~4 hours) making for a very lucrative day.
I'd imagine it isn't that much. I pay $160~200 a year for my coverage. So...for period 2 and 3? Like $50/driver? Wild guess.
Uber’s new illusion that there’s actually a career in being one of their drivers.
Oh look. It pays better than Uber per hour!
Great fricki'n question, and you hit the nail on the head. Reduced customer service means reduced ratings. Hurting big time.
You may argue that lowered price will entice people to rate higher, but nope. I don't think that's how people's minds work.
Thanks for this. Yes, that's how I view this job as well. An independent man with my own business.
In fact, this should be the way for anyone who may feel adequate about their job. Be your own captain. Control your own destiny.
Absolutely. Driving Uber is a constant fight against expenses and car depreciation. Less your car is worth, less depreciation you incur. Buy or own the oldest car Uber allows in your market and for service type.
Yeah, but that’s fifteen minutes you aren’t making money.
And it’s definitely more than fifteen minutes
Right, so they should require riders to post their sexual orientation in their profiles so the drivers know.
Remember the Colorado baker who resisting baking his cake for a gay wedding? He won.
https://www.denverpost.com/2018/06/04/masterpiece-cakeshop-ruling-supreme-court/
Driers can indeed decide what clients to pickup, even if it's based on sexual orientation. Drivers are independent contractors. They should be able to choose what rides they want and what riders they service.

I never thought of this. Never thought there maybe a correlation between ratings and how much they tip, except for higher=more tip.
Wait, rereading what you wrote...who are you saying don’t tip? People who have higher than 4.95?
So people who are between 4.85-4.95 are those that tip the most?
Of course, you can. That seems fair to me, and customers expect it.
You will be paid for the time you wait. You will be paid less than what you would if you were transporting a passenger, but at least you get paid for simply waiting! Make sure to kill the engine so you don't waste gas.
Great answer. and helpful. thanks, man.
good call on driving away.
I have had like 13 year-olds try to get on my car. I have always said no to those. Just cancel hard, and send a courtesy note to Uber to see if they can NOT let it hurt my cancellation. (No, Uber never responds.)
The issue is with those who are borderline. Am I to check their license?
you mean their bot sends you a canned message.
Yeah, that grinds my gears how Uber pads the arrival time. It was probably an attempt to give us additional time to arrive, as if we are late the riders can cancel. However, this makes us run into situations where we end up waiting double parked. Waiting = no money = bad for all drivers.
Amen, brotha.
