The car you get with UberXL, can be a numbr of different cars, so there's always a chance you get a smaller SUV. So watch out for that.
and the problem here is that the driver doesn't have to pick up big cargo items. and they hate it when you have big items that needs to be loaded. It can take time in loading and it can damage their cars. They will definitely not like it. (I wouldn't.)
I would request a UberXL, and immediately call the driver to see if he is willing to do so. By some luck, you would get one that doesn't mind and will do the task for you. Make sure to mention upront that you would tip handsomely. (Don't wait until it's over and offer. Just offer upfront.)

Not sure if this is a formal movement, but I have heard vocal groups of rideshare drivers discussing this.
At high level, they are against the illusion of transparency and flexible work schedule that Uber promotes. They feel that as independent workers, they should be able to see the rides they are accepting and decide where to work and what riders to pick up.
They also feel unfair where the riders can see a lot about them but the drivers cannot. For example, riders can see the gender and race of the drivers, but the drivers cannot. If riders can discriminate why can't the drivers?

I stopped paying attention to any types of driver promotions and incentives. Lyft started this trend earlier and Uber is all over it now.
It’s an obvious attempt to confuse the drivers so they don’t really know how much they’re making. They will do this to make us work harder while making less money.
Wow. I hadn’t even noticed. I only drive Lyft as a gap filler. Thank you.
This is a huge blow to Lyft drivers. ...I mean I see why they would do it. They want the acceptance rate to go up and stop drivers from cherry picking. I mean with taxis, it’s illegal to do that.
We all talk about how we are independent contractors and how they can’t dictate which rides we take. This is a clever way to make us accept all requests.
Uber is mega secretive about the earnings and how much they take now. Its shadiness is at a stratospheric level.
The even created a new earnings page that outright tells us they’re taking too much commission yet they ignore our questions. The RideshareGuy has published many articles and proof yet Uber hasn’t responded.
One example is the way they still pay the drivers for the base fare and when Uber figures out a way to charge riders more (based on shady unposted rates), they keep all the extra. This is screwing both drivers and passengers. And here we sit, all powerless. FCC? Attorney general? Can anyone do anything?
Not crazy. You are supposed to see the distance to pick up your rider.
That's the old app. It isn't anywhere in the new app.
This is a quality post.
#1 - The one on how drivers don't know how much they are making is a bit sad. but in a way, it's Uber's way of hiding the real cost of running this driving business.
#2 - Trading in the value of their car for their short-term needs. Again, sad. but so true, as it beats up on your car so much.
#3 and #4 - These talk to playing a game, social validation, psychic rewards. Again, a bit sad, but very true.
#5 - Being manipulated. Yikes. Again I agree.
Sensitive topic but it isn't necessary a horrible one. Let me try to answer.
Why don't I quit my job as an Uber driver? Probably the same reason you don't just quit your job because your boss sucked, you don't get paid enough, or hours suck. We all do this to make a living, and we do what we don't like to do.
Of course, we can complain just as you do about your job. Speaking up is good, as it calls for action to improve the system.
If I were to spell it out? I do Uber because I do like the flexible hours that it brings, and I frankly think I am really good at it.
Thank you. As a driver, I appreciate that you are mindful and thoughtful of the drivers' circumstances. I think you already are aware that drivers do not prefer short trips, as Uber takes a flat fee right off the bat, and sometimes the pickup (the part we don't get paid) takes longer than the ride itself.
I think your situation is very understandable, and you should take an Uber/Lyft for that purpose. The ride may end up being $5, but if you can tip a few dollars, say even $3~, that will make it worth it for the driver.
You will be stuck doing lots of small trips, and remember us drivers HATE doing that. With the 75 rides looming, you will choose to work in cities where the trips are shorter. Then you end up paying a much bigger chunk of your fare because of the booking/service fee. People also tip very little on those shorter rides.
Where you make the most money is those longer drives. That's where the money is, say trips from the airport to a town 45 minutes away. Those weekend travelers, for example. Short trips are the people going 4 minutes from their house to work because it is raining and they didn't want to take the bus. Yuck.
This is Uber's ploy to get a group of drivers who are willing to cover those short rides. There you have it.
I second this.
The surge has a finicky behavior where it doesn't kick in when overall volume of riders and drivers is low. Even when there are disproportionate number of riders are asking for rides with only a few drivers, if there aren't that many people out, the surge doesn't kick in.
So I noticed this during bad weathers Like during a snowstorm, where riders need to get aroud but the drivers aren't out. I tried venturing out but despite the fact that there were plenty of riders asking for rides, at least relative to how many drivers were out, I never saw a surge.
Come on. Do a public service, and kick in a surge. These people are happy to pay extra to be able to get around during a storm.
Are you talking about how you can't find one? I can't either.
There's no way this would work or even worth it.
Traitor!!!!
I think that's a brilliant idea, but the issue here is an entitlement and the outbound blame this person projects. Some people just can never admit their own faults and try to blame others for all their own problems.
If you were late? by 20 minutes? Maybe you should have woken up 20 mintues earlier that morning.
This is it. Now I am convinced all riders are self-centered crazies.
In bed. Staring at the phone.
You mean that thing Lyft is giving away for free?
We drive 14 hours a day, at the oddest times of the days and oddest days of the weeks. Our work schedule is the exact opposite of everyone else's day, where we work on weekends and mornings and nights. (basically whenever normal people aren't working)
Never get to see the family. I go out on the road while everyone's sleeping, because early mornig is a great time to make money. Then I sleep during the day while the kids are at school, and by the time they get home, I am on the road again. Then I stay out through dinner time (people have to get to dinner plans!) and I come home when people are done being humans and my whole family is asleep.
Do the math.
Ooooooh, dude, this is a "thing" right now. I have so much to say but I have to go drive. It's Friday night and raining! LOL. I will write later.
My biggest top pet peeves.
1) People who make me wait. Time is money!!!
2) Smokers! Keep your habits to yourself. Why take that huge puff beffore you get in the car. You stink up my car and it ruins the experience not just for me but following passengers.
that makes sense. thanks.
