The car you get with UberXL, can be a numbr of different cars, so there's always a chance you get a smaller SUV. So watch out for that.
and the problem here is that the driver doesn't have to pick up big cargo items. and they hate it when you have big items that needs to be loaded. It can take time in loading and it can damage their cars. They will definitely not like it. (I wouldn't.)
I would request a UberXL, and immediately call the driver to see if he is willing to do so. By some luck, you would get one that doesn't mind and will do the task for you. Make sure to mention upront that you would tip handsomely. (Don't wait until it's over and offer. Just offer upfront.)

Not sure if this is a formal movement, but I have heard vocal groups of rideshare drivers discussing this.
At high level, they are against the illusion of transparency and flexible work schedule that Uber promotes. They feel that as independent workers, they should be able to see the rides they are accepting and decide where to work and what riders to pick up.
They also feel unfair where the riders can see a lot about them but the drivers cannot. For example, riders can see the gender and race of the drivers, but the drivers cannot. If riders can discriminate why can't the drivers?

I stopped paying attention to any types of driver promotions and incentives. Lyft started this trend earlier and Uber is all over it now.
It’s an obvious attempt to confuse the drivers so they don’t really know how much they’re making. They will do this to make us work harder while making less money.
Nah, I don't think that's true.

Great post. Thanks for putting this together. Super fascinating.
See what non-drivers know is that we usually have a good rapport with body shops or car washes, that they would let us run in for a quick potty. This is even true in Manhattan.
...and there's always the double parking option at the corner store. We usually find a nice discrete place behind delivery trucks or construction fences on the side streets.
Hamilton has a huge boost in number of drivers. I would expect drivers to be available. Hamilton is covered, large enough city, and have multiple airports.
Here's an advice. Try checking your Uber app a week before at 3:00AM. See if there are drivers at that hour.
Here's the boilerplate.
"I'll get you there as quickly and safely as I can."
You mean Uber's extensive driver training? LOL.
No, there is no mention of how we shouldn't be on a call.
I am not such a talkative person so I wouldn't anyways, but I do try to avoid phone calls. I am working, and I shouldn't be making personal calls.
You just let the cat out of the bag. Come on. Now they know.
I think surprisingly most Uber drivers are 40~50 white dudes, so perhaps not?
We are made fun of a lot for our weight, social ineptitude, and the fact that we make so little.
Vomit. 5 times and counting.
Yes, it's actually coverage. Very unpopular with passengers. It's loud, annoying, and bright in their faces while they ride.
While I agree with your sentiment, you aren't a driver, are you? (or part-time driver) 12-hour shift is nothing. We work 14 to 16 hours sometimes, and that's just to make a living.
See, what you don't get is that we sit around a lot during the day. and those times, we would be "taking breaks". We sit at cafes, we eat, we read, we sometimes even take a snooze, and that's while we are online with Uber.
A "shift" to a driver isn't a normal shift for an office worker. Driving for taxis and Uber is more like a life style. I know a few buddies who started driving part-time (per my referral) who would wait for their customers in their living rooms.
Wait, I thought you were talking about the destination location. You are talking about the pickup location?
Uber has never hidden that. It tells you where the pick up is even when you have the app open.
So it isn't a huge deal, but yeah, exact address can be useful.
Wow. That doesn't seem right. I don't think it happens on my Driver app.
Can you share the screenshot? Are you using an old version of the app or iOS or something?
The requirement to hide some of that information actually depends on your location, i.e. the city you drive in. In Chicago, for example, you can still see the pax's first names.
I will admit, that request looks like a dream request to me. 1.5 hour drive to my house ($150~200) to finish my day? :Drooling.
I get it though. When you gotta be somewhere, you gotta be somewhere. I guess the destination filter sorta failed but it sorta worked, right? We can see why it did what it did.
Well, don't speak too fast. You don't know how much they pay.
Each parent was paying like $17 a kid and they carpool in most cases.
and they pay drivers $30/hour. At least so they say.
I looked into HopSkipDrive, and read up on a few others. They aren't so much rideshare companies in a way that you don't really call them on an ad-hoc and as-needed basis on your smartphone. It's basically a taxi service catering to kids.
You end up getting a schedule, and you go to specific locations at specific times. Then you chauffeur these privileged kids to place. The company monitors your every move, in terms of your GPS location, your background your schedule, every drop-off and pickup, etc.
It's like driving a school bus. No thanks.
The graph on Peak times to work is interesting. I see some windows during breakfast and dinner where you'd rather be driving for food delivery.
I think they gave up. Many drivers have moved over to Uber and Lyft. The biggest hurdle was that they didn't own cars (taxis are leased), but that also seems to have a solution as almost anyone rent from these rideshare companies now.
Medallions are being sold off in auctions and bankruptcy courts.
No government officials stood up and fought Uber. Regulations have not been adjusted, and the fares have not been adjusted, as far as I can tell. No helping hands to the drivers or company owners.
The reason you don't hear about it now is that people either left or gave up. Sad, yes.
I encourage my passengers, sure. I believe in them, and my job is to get them from A to B safely.
I do it in a nice way. Maybe just say, "Are you bucked up, ready to go?" and if they don't, I don't push it. After I said that and they don't do it, that means they don't wanna do it.
Also worried about liability concerns for me not warning them. Ha! Maybe I am selfish
