Here is the full review after he gave it a go for a week.
Top Takeaways
Pay is comparable but the rideshare bonuses really tilt the scales! Uber and Lyft pay top drivers up to $500 per week on top of fares just to get them out on the road.
Taxi passengers tended to be older, more mature and far more interesting. Many of them had a strong anti Uber and Lyft bias because of the increased congestion associated with rideshare.
The taxi sign-up process is much more onerous even though both rideshare drivers and taxi drivers are doing the exact same job. Jay had to submit fingerprints, a drug test, online training and even submit a few paper forms.
It requires far more skill to be a good taxi driver than a good Uber/Lyft driver.

Yes, you can schedule a ride ahead in SF if you are worried about getting a ride, though as RedANT stated you should have no problem getting a ride on demand.
If you are looking for companies that focus on scheduling rides in advance you can use RideGuru's Fare Calculator and look under the "Book Ahead" tab for your trip to find companies that will allow you to easily book your ride in advance.

Here is a handy guide for what each car size can accommodate!
Here are a couple of helpful posts:
What's up with Tipping?
Can my Uber or Lyft driver see how much I tip?
Sorry to hear about your troubles! I think you will, unfortunately, have a hard time finding a driver who will be willing and able to drive such a long distance. Plus the fare for a trip like this would be quite expensive!
If you are the adventurous sort, you can always try ordering a Lyft or Uber and immediately letting your driver know of your destination, who knows maybe you will get a driver who is up for the challenge :)
Another idea, is to download and use a carpooling app. Perhaps you will find someone traveling in the same direction as you! This article outlines some carpooling applications.
If scheduled Lyft rides are available in your area, there will be a "clock" icon to the right of the "pickup location" field. Unfortunately, Lyft scheduled rides are not available everywhere so you might not have this icon option.
Thanks for the feedback! I'll look into Carol Drives, it sounds great!
I don't think it would as one of the requirements for an XL is capacity for 6 passengers. For more information, including an entire list of vehicle makes and models that are allowed for each type of Uber service visit this article here.
LOL
How do we know that the cops aren't actually Uber drivers in their off hours?! lol
If you are still in your coverage area after your trip you can set your driver destination to your home and, hopefully, get someone heading that direction to recoup some of the cost!
Unfortunately, Lyft's scheduled rides are only available in about 30 cities across the US. If scheduled rides are available in your area, you will see the clock icon next to the field where you enter your pick up location. If scheduled rides are not available in your area then the icon will not be available for you to use.
Lyft Classic is the standard, orginal Lyft option.
This says he left amazon at the end of 2017, its not like he was out of amazon for that long.
Here is an article that outlines more information on Uber's Long Distance Pickup Fee.
Here is more information:
"The terms of the subscription models seem to vary, but appear targeted at users who spend up to $450 on ride-hailing a month. One all-access pass offered up to 30 standard Lyft rides for $199 a month, another was priced at $300, and another at $399 for 60 rides. Individual rides up to $15 were covered under the all-access pass. It wasn’t immediately clear how users would be charged for rides that exceed $15. "

Thanks for pointing out this error MykaForrest! We have gone ahead and fixed the typo to say that "scheduled rides with Uber are not guaranteed".
Statement from Tempe Police.
I've been wondering, is a "slice of pizza" really a lost item? Seem's more like the passenger just didn't want to take his trash with him haha.
You should be fine with an Uber X, as long as you have a reasonable amount of personal luggage. An Uber X has trunk space for 2-3 large suitcases or 3-4 medium/small suitcases plus you will have extra room in the cab of the car as you only have 2 passengers. This article outlines all the different Uber services by car type, passenger capacity, and luggage capacity so you can pick the correct ride for your luggage amount.

Check out this thread on this same topic here.
This article might be helpful. It outlines all the different rideshare (Uber, Lyft, etc) services by car type, passenger capacity, and luggage capacity!
